Description

Add Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to your website

Google Analytics is one of the web’s most popular analytics tools. Google Analytics (GA) lets you see where on the web people found your site, or the source of your traffic. For example, an organic search engine query, or a link from another page. It also shows you the medium, organic, paid or referral traffic.

Looking at the where on the web people found your site can be informative. You can get an overview of which avenues for traffic are performing well over time. Start tracking the metrics for your business – find out who is accessing your website, from which location and how much time they spend on the website.

GA4 is the latest version of Google Analytics (GA) that combines data from both apps and websites.  All Universal Analytics (UA) properties can be ‘upgraded’ to GA4, meaning a new Analytics property will be created for collecting the new data and your current GA account will not be affected.

Google Analytics is required for Search Engine Optimisation SEO and many other services including Conversion Rate Optimisation CRO.

Google Analytics is one of the top, most powerful tools out there for monitoring and analysing traffic on your website. It gives you an enormous amount of information on website traffic including, who is visiting your site, what they are looking for, and how they are getting to your site. Know whether your PPC ad campaigns or social media campaigns are working.
You can set up a GA4 property if you have an app, a website or both – it’s recommended you set up a GA4 account alongside existing GA accounts if you have them, giving you time to collect data in GA4 without losing any data currently held in your GA accounts.
Should You Use Google Analytics? You do really need to have some form of analytics on your website or app. Without analytics, you can’t draw conclusions about how people are using your site. Without data, you can’t make the improvements that are going to grow your business or brand. You can’t manage what you can’t measure!

Google Universal Analytics (UA) V Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

UA collects and reports data using a session-based approach, which groups user activities into time periods. GA4 properties employ a more flexible, event-based model, which allows for more accurate reporting and the transmission of additional data to Google Analytics with each interaction, such as the value for purchase, page title, and user location.
Each user interaction is transmitted to GA as an independent event under this model, which means it is not confined within a session like hit events are in UA attributes. This implies that each event delivered to GA4 can include up to 25 extra event parameters, significantly more than the current 4 UA permits (Category, Action, Label, Value). Up to a maximum of 500 distinctly named events can be sent to GA4, giving a much wider set of data to monitor engagement with.

Goals/conversions

‘Goals’ in UA are now called ‘Conversions’ in GA4. In the free version of Google Analytics, UA allows a maximum of 20 goals, but this has been extended in GA4 to 30 Conversions. Goal set up differs in both, with UA allowing goals based on Duration, Destination, Events, and a custom set up (Event Category =) etc. GA4 only allows Conversions based on events – meaning any pageview goals will need to be sent as an event to GA4 before being used as a conversion. This again reinforces the recommendation of setting up GA4 alongside any existing Google Analytics account you currently have.

What data does Google Analytics collect?

The default install of Google Analytics captures the following data:

  • Users’ numbers
  • Session information
  • Geolocation estimate of visitors
  • Information about visitors browser and device (know how many come via mobile v desktop)

Please check with Google about the full list of events and user properties collected by Google Analytics.
