Quick Answer – Google Ads Clicks, No Enquiries |
Google Ads campaigns that generate clicks but no enquiries usually suffer from one or more of six issues: broad, poorly targeted keywords; missing negative keywords; ad copy that doesn’t match search intent; landing pages that don’t match the ad; missing or broken conversion tracking; or a campaign that hasn’t been actively optimised in weeks. Each of these is fixable — often within the first few weeks of proper review. |
If you’re watching click numbers climb in your Google Ads dashboard while your phone stays silent and your inbox stays empty, I understand exactly how frustrating that is. You’re paying for every one of those clicks, and right now they’re not turning into anything.
The good news is that this is one of the most common issues we see when we take over an existing account — and in almost every case, it’s fixable. Here’s what’s usually going wrong, in the order we check it.
1. Your Keywords Are Too Broad
This is, by far, the most common cause. If you’re bidding on broad match keywords without tight controls, Google will show your ad for a much wider range of searches than you intended — some closely related to what you offer, many not.
For example, a business offering “office cleaning services” bidding broadly on “cleaning” might show up for people searching for cleaning products, cleaning jobs, or carpet cleaning machines. Every one of those clicks costs money. None of them were ever going to become a customer.
How to fix it – Broad Keywords
Shift toward phrase match and exact match keywords for your highest-intent terms, and build out a proper keyword structure that separates broad discovery campaigns from tightly targeted, high-intent campaigns. It costs more per click, but the clicks you get are dramatically more likely to convert.
2. You Don't Have a Negative Keyword List (Or It's Not Being Maintained)
Negative keywords tell Google which searches to exclude your ad from. Without them, your budget quietly leaks away on searches that look relevant to Google’s matching system but have nothing to do with your business — things like “free,” “jobs,” “DIY,” or “how to” when you’re selling a professional service.
How to fix it – Negative Keyword List
Review your Search Terms Report weekly — this shows you exactly what people typed before clicking your ad — and add irrelevant terms to your negative keyword list as you find them. This should be an ongoing task, not a one-time setup step.
3. Your Ad Copy Doesn't Match What People Are Searching For
When someone searches “emergency plumber Dublin” and your ad headline says “Professional Plumbing Services,” it technically matches — but it doesn’t reassure the searcher they’ve found exactly what they need. Generic ad copy gets generic results.
How to fix it – Ad Copy
Mirror the searcher’s language directly in your headlines. If they searched “emergency plumber Dublin,” your ad should say exactly that. Include a clear point of difference — same-day service, free quotes, 20 years in business — and a specific next action, not just “Learn More.”
4. Your Landing Page Doesn't Match the Ad
This is one of the most damaging — and most common — mistakes we see. A business runs an ad for “emergency electrician Cork” and sends every click to their generic homepage, which talks about the whole business rather than answering the specific, urgent question the searcher had.
Even a well-targeted, well-written ad will underperform if the landing experience doesn’t continue the conversation the ad started.
How to fix it – Landing Page
Build a dedicated landing page for each core service or offer, with a headline that matches the ad, a clear and immediate call to action, and enough trust signals — reviews, credentials, guarantees — to reassure someone they’ve found the right business.
5. Your Conversion Tracking Isn't Set Up Properly
Sometimes the enquiries are actually happening — they’re just not being tracked. If your conversion tracking isn’t correctly configured, you (and Google’s bidding algorithm) have no visibility into what’s actually working. This is a particularly costly blind spot, because Google’s automated bidding strategies rely on accurate conversion data to optimise your campaigns. Broken tracking doesn’t just hide your results — it actively makes your campaign perform worse over time.
How to fix it – Conversion Tracking
Audit your conversion tracking setup in Google Ads and Google Analytics together. Confirm that phone calls, form submissions, and any other genuine enquiry are all being captured accurately — not just page views or button clicks that don’t represent a real lead.
6. Nobody Has Looked at the Account in Weeks
Google Ads is not a “set it and forget it” platform. Costs drift upward, competitors change their bids, new negative keywords are needed, and Quality Scores shift over time. An account that isn’t actively reviewed will quietly become less efficient, week after week, without anything dramatic happening to flag it.
How to fix it – Account Review
Set a consistent weekly or fortnightly review cadence — checking search terms, adjusting bids, testing new ad copy, and pausing what isn’t working. This is one of the main things a good management service should be doing on your behalf, and it’s worth asking directly whether your current provider is actually doing it.
What This Looked Like for One of Our Clients
CES Environmental Services came to us in a similar position — traffic and activity that wasn’t translating into the results the business needed. Working through targeting, relevance, and conversion gaps in a structured way, we doubled their organic traffic and improved the quality of enquiries coming through Google Ads.
The pattern is consistent: the fix is rarely “spend more.” It’s almost always “spend more precisely.”
A Quick Self-Diagnosis Checklist
- ✅ Have I reviewed my Search Terms Report in the last two weeks?
- ✅ Do I have a negative keyword list, and has it been updated recently?
- ✅ Does my ad copy directly reflect the exact phrase someone searched?
- ✅ Does my landing page match the specific service or offer in the ad?
- ✅ Is my conversion tracking confirmed accurate — not just technically “installed”?
- ✅ Has anyone actively optimised this account in the last two weeks?
Frequently Asked Questions - Google Ads Clicks, No Enquiries
How long does it take to fix a Google Ads campaign that isn’t converting?
Simple fixes like adding negative keywords or adjusting ad copy can show improvement within days. More structural issues — like landing page rebuilds or conversion tracking overhauls — typically take two to four weeks to fully implement and show measurable impact.
Should I pause my campaign while I fix these issues?
Not necessarily. In most cases, it’s better to keep the campaign running at a reduced budget while you address the issues, so you don’t lose the historical performance data Google uses to optimise your account. A full pause can sometimes reset that data.
Can a bad Google Ads account be fixed, or should I start fresh?
Most accounts can be fixed rather than rebuilt from scratch. Starting completely fresh means losing valuable historical data. An audit will usually tell you within a day or two whether repair or rebuild is the better path for your specific account.
